Title: Summer Celebration

Materials: Foam board, hot glue, faux moss, tissue paper, sewing pins, white fabric, twine, watercolor paper, white and gold paints

Size: 14in wide, 10in tall

Artist Statement:

This sculpture reflects themes of community, nature, tradition, and deception. I designed the box and its contents to convey a sense of community. I kept the contents of the box relatively plain to show the outward presenation of a eerily perfect place.

Paper Cutting Sculpture

 Title: Abandoned

Size: about 10in tall, 14in diameter

Artists I am Inspired by:

The Four Seasons by Sesshu Toyo

Autumn Landscape

Artist Statement

This sculpture is a response to several works seen above. I was especially inspired by the color blue from the jar and and feeling of isolation in the landscapes. The texture of my sculpture was inspired by The Four Seasons by Sesshu Toyo. I chose to include the color blue to appeal to loneliness and sadness. Through these pieces of inspiration, I was effectively able to convey an isolated place surrounded by seemingly endless landscape.

Secret Lives of Color

 Color #1: Cerulean

Cerulean, "Stairway to Heaven", fine line pen, water color, 11 x 14

Cerulean was a rare and highly sought-after pigment among artists, and only the very wealthy could afford it. The Persians call it bleu celeste, or heavenly blue. I chose to depict cerulean that way. I sketched out the structure of a staircase and then went in and did all the details in a fine-line pen. I knew I wanted the cerulean to be faint and almost hazy as you would hypothetically climb the staircase to heaven. I did a light wash of watercolor over the top of the paper so the "heavens" would appear to be washing over the stairs.
